En un primer momento sus inicios musicales estuvieron muy ligados al de su hermano, el superconocido Mike Oldfield. De hecho con 15 años formó un dúo de folk con él llamado "The Sallyangie", donde quedaron plasmadas sus cualidades como escritora. Pero muy pronto optó por seguir un camino diferente en la búsqueda y experimentación de nuevos espacios musicales. De esa forma fue como la irlandesa Sally Oldfield publica en 1978 su primer álbum en solitario titulado “Water Bearer”. En él se hace cargo de la producción y mezclas, dotándolas de cierta atmósfera mística y misteriosa, que su angelical voz se encarga de canalizar de forma armoniosa, dando lugar a composiciones llenas de encanto y hechizo como "Mirrors".
